J.E.Murphy

2013

Often being captured on film is a way for the world to remember you, a way of saying "I was here".

While video may degrade over time its content never changes, whereas the memory of the occasion often does. Each time we recall a memory its state within our mind is said to become "fluid", it becomes malleable, allowing for subconsious distortion. This distortion is often self-preservatory causing an incremental romanticisation of our past. "I was here" is an ode to this process - 5 compositions are allowed to aleatorically rewrite themselves each time the piece / website is viewed. Like the memories the compositions represent each time we "recall" or view them they become fluid, never the same twice, yet still comfortably familiar.

All footage contained in "I Was Here" sourced from The Prelinger Archive's collection of unidentified amateur home movies c. Mid-20th Century.
